On my way home from the Indy Mile on Sunday in a borrowed pick-up I got rear ended on the freeway. Traffic had slowed down in order to safely pass a police car on the right side of the freeway assisting a stranded motorist. Just a s I passed the police car at 50 mph an older women in a Toyota SUV slammed into me at what the officer thought was close to 70mph. Thankfully the whole thing was captured on film. Indiana is a "Fault state" and he assigned her the fault. The officer and I sat scratching our heads when we realized the extent of the damage. She totalled her SUV - the radiator ended up on her windshield. The force pushed the box on my buddies truck into the back of the cab so hard the power door locks no longer function. Her airbags deployed, mine did not. Looks like here insurance company (if she has one) will be footing the bill on my friends truck which is looking like it may be salvageable even though the frame is tweaked. Both her and I seemed to escape serious injuries.
Once I got home I rolled the '39 out of the back of the truck and realized something was wrong, it seemed to flex as it rolled. I crawled under and noticed a crack on one side and a clean break on the other, right where the seat post meets the lower cross member. A deeper going over revealed a transmission that will not shift and what appears to be a bend in the rear down tubes on the chain side. The hit was so hard it pulled the tie downs in the bed way forward and out of wack.
Looks like the '39 is out for the rest of the year...
Bummer. I wish people would pay attention while driving. I almost rode the Road Queen down too.....
A few days with the welder and a good size hammer. It'll be like it never happened...
